CASA to Host Community Awareness Breakfast
LANCASTER, PA (April 4, 2014) - CASA is hosting its second annual "I Am For the Child” Community Awareness Breakfast on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Casa di Fiori at the Inn at Leola Village. The event is free and open to the community but advance registration is required as seating is limited. Attendees will enjoy a continental breakfast and the entirety of the program will be less than hour.
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. The organization trains volunteers to advocate on behalf of the best interest of a child who has suffered abuse and neglect. CASAs are appointed by a judge to specific cases and appear in court testify.
The children that CASA volunteers advocate for have experienced abuse and neglect so severe that it requires the intervention of social service agencies and the courts.
Volunteers work to help insure a safe and permanent home for the child as quickly as possible. They are an extension of the "eyes and ears” of the judge.
Join us to learn how CASA makes a difference every day in the lives of Lancaster County’s most vulnerable children and how you can help.
One of the scheduled speakers is a young adult who was adopted from foster care as child. She will share her experience and the impact of having a CASA volunteer advocate for her during her time in foster care.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our organization and the many opportunities to get involved. At the close of this event, everyone who attends will find a way to join us in saying ‘I am for the Child.’” stated Jessica Laspino, Executive Director.
There is a clear need in Lancaster for the CASA program and a clear goal for every child in foster care to have a CASA volunteer by 2020. This breakfast serves as a call to action – we can meet the need, but we need everyone to help us.
Children with a CASA volunteer: are more likely to find a safe and permanent home; spend less time in foster care; do better in school; are less likely to be bounced from home to home; and receive more help while in the foster care system.
CASA is central to fulfilling society's most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child's right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family.
