SuperHeroes needed for 5K run

LANCASTER, PA – Every child needs a hero, abused children need SuperHeroes. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lancaster (CASA) is sending out a call for our community’s superheroes to run in the 2nd Annual SuperHero 5k & Kids Fun Run on Saturday, June 15th, 2013 at Hempfield High School, all to benefit CASA.

CASA’s Annual SuperHero 5k features a fast, flat course that loops through local neighborhoods and begins and ends on the track at Hempfield High School. In 2012, runners came dressed in a myriad of superhero costumes to display their support for the CASA cause. "The event committee was really excited about the enthusiasm that so many of the participants showed for the theme – it exceeded our expectations by far. We know that there are a lot of road races in Lancaster and the surrounding areas, but the SuperHero aspect makes this race unique and fun,” stated Jessica Laspino, Executive Director of CASA of Lancaster. Once again, this year CASA will be offering cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers, and medals for the top three males and females in each age group.

Following the 5k Run, the Kids Fun Run will begin at 9:30am. Children as young as three may race varying distances on the track to the enthusiastic cheers of their families and the spectators. Last year, the children in the Kids’ Fun Run run also displayed their inner SuperHero reveling in another opportunity to dress up and race down the track as Spiderman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and even the Power Puff girls. "There are other CASA programs in the country that hold similar events in conjunction with the SuperHero Foundation. This is an event that we can hold to really connect with the community and our mission. Given the recent success of the Marvel movies in theatres and the popularity of superheroes, this is a natural fit,” added Ms. Laspino.

In addition to the Runs, CASA have a Family Festival during the entire Event – this year featuring a Bounce House and an Inflatable Obstacle Course – all FREE of charge. In addition, there will be face-painters, balloon artists, and booths with opportunities for poster making and fake tattoos.

CASA provides trained volunteers who are court-appointed to advocate for the best interest of children who have suffered abuse and neglect with a belief that all children deserve a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. CASA volunteer advocates believe that growing up in a home free of abuse and neglect is fundamental human right and they fight to ensure that right for the most vulnerable members of our communities.
