Twelve Volunteers Complete Advocate Training for CASA

Volunteer Advocate Class Winter 2014 Twelve Volunteers Complete Advocate Training for CASA

LANCASTER, PA (April 10, 2014) - Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County recently swore in twelve new volunteer advocates.

CASA volunteer advocates are appointed by the court to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children with the belief that all children deserve safe, nurturing, and permanent homes.

Over thirty friends, family members, and CASA supporters witnessed Judge Jay J. Hoberg swear in twelve volunteer advocates during a ceremony held March 6 at the CASA office – 53 N. Duke St, Suite 218 in Lancaster.

The graduating Winter 2014 class members are: Kristen Albert (Lancaster), Pamela Baldwin (Strasburg), Carolina Ferran (Lititz); Lisa Garcia (Landisville), Anthony Hodson (Lancaster), Philip Kabatt (Lebanon), Marilyn Lapp-Johnson (Bird-In-Hand), Tara Neely (Mount Joy), Katelynn Nguyen (Lancaster), Jami Rhynes (Lancaster), Heather Weaver (Lititz), and Donna Welsh (Mountville).

The volunteers completed the 30-hour training program required before being appointed by the court to advocate for a child or sibling group. Prior to being appointed to a child, CASA volunteers must also complete a series of background clearances.

This class marks the first time CASA has held training during the winter season. CASA’s goal is to provide a child advocate for every child in foster care in Lancaster County by 2020.

"To reach our ‘every child by 2020 goal’, we need to sustain the growth we've experienced to date. I am delighted that the level of interest from the community allowed us to add an additional training class for 2014. There are still hundreds of children in Lancaster that can benefit from a CASA." said Jessica Laspino, Executive Director.

CASA volunteers have served 198 children since the first case was appointed to CASA in January 2010.

CASA volunteers believe that every child deserves to grow up in a home free of abuse and neglect, and that growing up in a safe home is a fundamental human right. CASA volunteers fight for that right, they lift up children's voices, they lift up children's lives.
